Event FAQ’s

What is Mardi Gras?

Mardi Gras is French for “Fat Tuesday” which became the name of the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. Fat Tuesday is the day when people celebrate, throw parties, dress in costumes, and overindulge in just about everything they can before the Lenten days ahead. All of this celebrating end at the stroke of midnight. Once the clock turns 12:00am, Ash Wednesday begins. Everyone then gives up their vices through the period of Lent which runs through Easter.

Mardi Gras is a lot like an exotic masquerade ball. The official colors are gold, purple and green. Shiny clothes, glitter, royalty type costumes are popular. Paint your face, to disguise yourself with an exotic mask. These are the traditional type costumes; these days however, Mardi Gras has evolved into a Halloween of sorts- You can wear or “not” wear just about anything.

Think of Mardi Gras as a New Year’s Eve Party meets Halloween.

What is the Murphys Mardi Gras going to be like?

The emphasis for the Murphys Mardi Gras is on MASKS, any kind of mask! This creates the mystique of people not knowing who you are. This tradition goes back to the 1700’s when masks were worn to hide the identity of the party revelers. This enabled the rich, the poor and any nationality, creed or religion, one night to frolic with one another without being chastised for associating with people outside their own class.

Please, please, please if you can’t come in costume, wear a mask. If you don’t have a mask, you can buy one at the event.

There will be something for everyone. If you like to people watch, it doesn’t get much better than this! Expect to see some very “creative” costumes. Don’t just come to look, wear a costume to be seen!

Entertainment will be provided by Grammy award winner (and former lead singer of Santana) Tony Lindsay with special guests The Joint Chiefs bringing you the best in blues, soul and New Orleans music.
